Currently at Bancroft: 9. Got down around 1 this morning; too much wind for frost. Dock garden remains intact, although I don't suppose the summer vegetables are going to do any more growing. Pickled a peck of peppers this morning. (May not actually have pickled a peck.)

Persons who have recently discovered an interest in the Toronto Blue Jays: you keep using the word "pennant". I do not think it means what you think it means. Actually, it used to mean that, but hasn't since 1968. Although if this new/old usage turns out not to be temporospatially local, it will at least restore some lost sense to "pennant race".

Speaking of trivial points of usage: if something was last the case in 1968, has it not been the case since 1968, or has it not been the case since 1969? It has not been the case since it was last the case in 1968; it has not been the case since it was first not the case in 1969.... OH WORDS YOU KILL ME.

In news concerning things that don't irritate me, of which, thank God, there is still some from time to time, I saw my first junco of the cold season yesterday, on a trail near Tory Hill. Also, this year I managed to notice when the hummingbirds left: the rainy weekend of Sept. 12/13, which was the first time since the spring that the temperature didn't get above 15. Every year I wonder when they'll go, and I am irrationally afraid that my feeder will keep them here until they freeze to death. And now I ... well, I don't know, I have a fragment of data. Possibly that weekend was when all the hummingbirds around here were eaten by cats.
