Currently at Toronto Pearson: 20. High today: 24. The dewpoint has edged up to 17. But the Accuweather long-range doesn't offer much indication of a return of deep summer.

Today I heard the starlings massed somewhere nearby for the first time this summer. On exactly August 1 I came across the first aster of the year, a little ways up the drive at the cottage:

One of these days I'll get my baby loon pictures up here, but for now, back to the back yard.

Bugs really love coriander, for some reason.

A couple of weeks ago I got one of those upside-down finch feeders--

--since the house sparrows were cleaning out my non-upside-down finch feeder. The sparrows quickly figured out they could sit on the bottom of the hoop and eat out of the bottom holes, so I taped those up. There's one sparrow that seems to keep trying to eat upside down, and maybe succeeding somewhat, but it clearly doesn't like it. The finches are happy, if maybe not always with each other.

They've been pecking at the sunflowers, too:

Whatever finches have got, sparrows want:

I am pleased to see that the upside-down finch feeder feeds upside-down finches.

I like coriander too. Maybe I should be a bug. (I am kind of relieved not to be a bug.)

What's not to like? As for the feeder, well, all birds just want to be fed. Nothing wrong with *that*
