Fall down from the skies

Three kestrels wheeled past this afternoon as I was expanding my vegetable gardens. At least two juncos are still around, a male making a ray-gun kind of noise I've never heard them make before--maybe they mate here and then go back up north. The red-hatted sparrow L. saw the other day was probably actually a tree sparrow--they spend the summer in the Arctic; a few were at the feeder in January, but I hadn't seen any since and assumed they were gone. A song sparrow was shuffling across the yard again today. A chickadee dropped a sunflower seed shell on my head as I was putting the feeder pole back together in yet another attempt at baffling.
