Currently at Toronto Pearson: 7. High today: 12, at midnight. Varying degrees of foggy all day. The warm bubble receded a bit to the west today--got up to 22 in Waterloo, 20 in Guelph, 18 on Manitoulin Island and in Parry Sound; 13 in Hamilton, 11 in Peterborough, 12 in Kingston. Still, the low tonight in Toronto will probably be higher than the normal high (which is 5), and it'll probably stay that way through most of the next week. Accuweather has snow in the forecast for the following week, though.

Today was the first day of the year the sun was up for more than twelve hours; yesterday was the spring equilux, at 11 hours, 59 minutes of daylight in Toronto. We had 12:02 today.

L. saw one of the blackbirds back at the feeder today, and a red-hatted sparrow--probably a chipping sparrow?--yesterday. Today there seemed to be a song sparrow scratching in the grass in a junco-like way. The starling masses are back, and lots of robins. We heard a nighthawk the other night. Something snapped off the head of one of my irises--the skinny-flowered one--and apparently ate part of it sometime between yesterday afternoon and this morning. I tacked one of its complicated petals to the bulletin board above my screen here. Looking at the complicatedness of these flowers, I think, of course, of how my grandfather took watermelons to be positive proof of the existence of God.

Don't diss Barack Obama: Tim Thomas's 2011-12 save percentage, pre-White-House-snub: .933. Post-snub: .892.

It occurred to me today, to get rid of the unpleasantness of its being in the interest of teams such as the Leafs to lose at the end of the season to improve their draft position, you could have draft slots determined by the standings at some point before the end of the season, say at the trade deadline, or at the halfway point. That could create a risk of teams being tempted to tank earlier in the season, but I'd think that the overwhelming incentive to make the playoffs at just about any cost in the NHL would outweigh that. (I don't believe that teams deliberately tank for draft position anyway. But the stupidly cynical perception among fans at this time of year that they do, or must, or should, pollutes the game.)
