A funny thing struck me last week, amid news stories about insane World Series ticket prices and the NBA gambling scandal: the game on the field not only is but even looks like an island of innocence in a sea of corruption these days. Which is the opposite of how it has looked to people for most of my life, and it's maybe not very much what it was in the steroid years, but it's how I saw it as far back as I remember and it's how it is. The game is the game and these guys are playing it. You can't even say it's the only game with no clock anymore but even despite that the game is the game and these guys are playing it. And you know what, I swear I was thinking when they were up 4-3 going to the 9th that I still maintain that as desperately as you want to win this damn thing the playoffs are an exhibition held after the season is over, but they do make some things clear, and what they make clear above all is the game is the game and these guys are playing it.
