What the hell is happening here
Aug. 16th, 2018 08:53 pmRight now there are three pitchers in major league baseball with at least 30 innings pitched this year and at least ten times as many strikeouts as walks. Their ERAs are 1.45, 6.00, and 6.03. Last year there were also three such pitchers; their ERAs were 1.32, 1.59, and 2.97. The year before that, there were two: 1.69 and 1.45. Going back to 1990, the highest ERA I can find for a pitcher who had at least ten times as many strikeouts as walks in at least 30 IP was 4.35; that's the only one I can find over 4.00 until those two guys this year--which, of course the season has another six weeks to go, but you have to like the chances that at least one of them will end up over 5. (Prior to the 21st-century age of the three true outcomes, pretty much nobody ever had ten times as many strikeouts as walks, except Dennis Eckersley in 1990, when he walked four in 73.1 IP and had an ERA of 0.61.) The 6.03 belongs to Jays closer Ken Giles, who also happens to have no blown saves in fifteen opportunities this year, and who, before he got traded for a Mexican accused of a crime of moral turpitude, was best known for punching himself in the face. You can't make this shit up.
Currently at the back of my shed: 19.6. High today at Peterborough airport: 29. Today was the seventh straight day of no rain here, again. The Weather Underground robot is currently calling for 13.62 mm over the next eighteen hours, which is less than half of what it was calling for yesterday, and will no doubt be down to zero before long.
