Winter afternoons
Dec. 11th, 2014 10:29 pmCurrently at Bancroft: -10. Falling slowly from -7 at midnight.
Today was the fifth of seven consecutive days that the sun sets at 4:30 in these parts; on December 14 it will set at 4:31. I learned just last year that sunsets start getting later before the winter solstice, and sunrises start getting earlier after the solstice--in the first week of January, around here. How about that. I picked up last week that apparently the reason sunrise/sunset calculators don't get more precise than minutes is that sunrises and sunsets can't be predicted down to the second due to the unpredictability of atmospheric refraction. How about that. But anyway, seeing as today was the fifth of the seven days with the earliest sunset time, I suppose it's reasonable to suppose that sunsets started getting later today.
