Currently at Toronto Pearson: 3--just jumped up there from 1, where it's been for the last several hours. The Weather Network forecast has the UW first-time-to-20 contest ending on Thursday, which would beat the previous earliest winner by eleven days.
A couple of further hypotheses as to why it may be the case that more than 1/5 of Democrats believe that Rick Santorum is "too liberal":
(1) "Liberal" is just a dirty word for politicians you don't like, like "Arab". Maybe 10% of Democrats would agree that Rick Santorum is an Arab, who knows, or Rick Santorum sympathizes with Islamic terrorists. (Unfortunately the poll didn't give respondents the option of saying that someone is both "too liberal" and "too conservative".)
(2) People learn that "liberal" means "thinks the government should tell you what to do", whereas "conservative" means "thinks government should leave you alone". They gather that Rick Santorum thinks the government should tell you to be a Christian and not use birth control. Therefore, they believe that Rick Santorum is a liberal.
