Currently at Toronto Pearson: -9. High today: -7. Yesterday EC came up with something I've never seen before: snowsquall warnings in Ontario for non-lake-effect snow. Uncle Wikipedia notes that "a warning may ... be issued when blizzard-like conditions are expected to develop in the vicinity of a cold front for short periods" ... I seem to recall that EC lowered the blizzard bar a year or two ago, so I guess that may have had the side-effect of lowering the snowsquall bar.

Chances are you've heard that song "Somebody That I Used To Know"; quite possibly you've seen the video (or, uh, "film clip"; videos are "film clips" now, I gather? because we needed an older term for newer technology?), and if you've seen the video, you've probably also seen the cover video. But perhaps you have still not yet played the original video and cover video together, side by side. You should do that. I guess. (Press play on the original at the 4-and-a-tiny-titch second mark of the cover. Also turn the volume way down on the cover.)

I like this song probably more than any new song I've come across since Emilie Simon (which isn't saying much, or in fact anything, but still), and I keep wondering about it (in much the same way I was wondering about poetry back in the fall)--is this a good song? It's well put-together, anyway. (Lyrically, the general idea is great. Well, you know, I'm a sucker for a tragic impasse. A quote in Wikipedia from a reviewer about another of his songs is appropriate: "Now don't get me wrong, I have never been in a situation like this yet it feels so relatable." But in the execution it's simple, verging on crude.) But the other thing I keep thinking about it is that this sounds like a can't-miss song for all kinds of reasons, both musically and lyrically--it's the kind of song that maybe not everyone will like, but a lot of people will want to play it over and over and over--and I wonder what it was like for this guy, who apparently has been kicking around in relative obscurity for some time, to come up with it (and not just the song--he produced it himself). May be kinda like finding a golden ticket and not knowing whether there's really a Wonka factory out there.
