Gotta keep Rolen!
Jan. 16th, 2008 10:55 pmCurrently at Toronto Pearson: -1. High today: -1. Michael Kuss notes that there have been two sunny days so far in Toronto in 2008. And that "as expected during this La NiƱa January temperatures are above normal so far." What what?
I heartily approve of the Blue Jays acquiring Scott Rolen. I'm not sure, but I'm afraid that this is almost entirely because he was on one of my teams a couple of years ago. I get unaccountably attached to players on my teams. I'll always have a soft spot for Curt Schilling. Unfortunately.
I am terrible at remembering names. I've always assumed that this was probably some social-anxiety-related failure to pay attention when people are introduced. Today I got some striking evidence that I actually unconsciously block people's names. A bunch of people were introduced, including a guy named Tristan. Pretty memorable name. An hour or so later, I was trying to remember this guy's name, and what did I come up with? Iseult. And then I had to figure out: who and Iseult? For a few seconds, maybe five or more, I was stumped.
In most situations, I'll go to what might be peculiar lengths to avoid calling people by their names. Names, to me, are powerful magic. I'm not sure why.
Another thing I keep forgetting is what I was going to tell you is an Interesting Fact. Oh: it's that rayon and cellophane are the same stuff. I think that's a pretty Interesting Fact. I learned this because, for Christmas, I got a jacket which says it's partly made of viscose. Uncle Wikipedia says that viscose, when extruded from its acid bath in sheet form, is cellophane, and when extruded through a spinneret, is rayon. (I was thinking that I had learned in Grade 5 that crayfish have spinnerets. But actually those are swimmerets. Er.) Uncle Wikipedia also says that the production of viscose usually begins with wood or cotton. So, "cellophane" because it's made from cellulose. Those are some Interesting Facts!
