Currently at UW: 0.9. High today: 2.1, which it got up to this morning after rising slowly all night, before the snow showed up, just in time for me to walk up here in it and avoid bathroom renovations.

You want a sad sight, try an emu in the snow. One emu was kind of looking at the ground, looking back and forth, like it was wondering where the ground went. And snuffling. The other emu was just standing there shivering. I'm not sure emus are supposed to be in the snow. This little zoo is distressing me more and more every day. There was a squirrel sitting in the younger swans' food dish, eating their food. Yesterday there was a bird, a guinea hen or something, on the wrong side of its fence, looking for a way back in. (There was no way back in. How it could possibly have gotten on the wrong side of the fence, and not been put back on the right side, I have no idea.) Now that I'm seeing the zoo in the winter, I feel like I'm backstage at the circus seeing the elephants get beaten.

But, then, well, that's life, right? You suffer through the winter and, if you survive, when spring comes, it's all in the past, and too far off to worry about. Right?

(I walk by a hospital every day on my way up here. I really don't like it. I've been there, and I'll be back. That's where it all ends up, and it doesn't end up well.)
