I pick up Cam Ward, and he loses to the Penguins. When it rains, it pours.

This week's dish de la semaine is chili. I keep trying to make it bigger, but it never seems much bigger. Today, lentils returned, after a long absence, due to the fact that the only lentils in the local grocery store are green on the label. But they're yellow in the can, it turns out. (Which reminds me: I have resolved that, when I am king, there will be a law against orange windows on carrot bags.)

One of the more interesting issues to come out of the cartoon business is the question how Western governments ought to respond. There's a certain classically liberal kind of line--Hitchens takes it in Slate, and I've seen it from a couple of other columnists--that it's the responsibility of the state to stand up for freedom of expression, and shut up about how that freedom is exercised. I.e., the state's sole legitimate interest is in the right, not the good, even where only persuasive, not coercive, power is concerned.
