The meltdown has begun. Supposed to be 10-13 degrees tomorrow; more snow by the end of the week. Delta's hanging in there, looking to hang together, extra-tropical but still storm-force, into Morocco. I suspect that's rather unusual.

So, $47 million over five for a second-year closer. I don't think we're playing moneyball anymore. And now we won't have Miguel Batista to kick around anymore. As a closer, anyway.

Another tour through the newsmagazines yesterday. I really have to stop that. The only thing I particularly recall is a box in Time noting that nearly half of the American soldiers killed in Afghanistan have been killed in the last year. Read a couple of things suggesting that Rumsfeld et al. want to get the hell out of Iraq because this whole Iraq thing is diverting from their long-term goal of "scaring the bejeezus out of China". I don't remember who put it just that way.

You know what I think is particularly funny about the idea of invading Iran? (Apart from, you know, the idea itself.) The invasion of Iraq may very well have have resulted in a political set-up not very much unlike Iran's: a nominal democracy in which the ayatollahs hold the real power. And now this latest "democratization" in Egypt seems to be tending in the same direction.

Ah, which reminds me, caught about five seconds of that appalling "War at Home" show tonight on a Grey Cup commercial break--the father said something about how the kids don't respect them, or something else, or God, and the mother replied that it was their own fault, because they never took them "to temple or church."

boggle

No, really, as far as I could tell, that line was pretty much straight up. I can't imagine what sort of Jewish joke could have been in the background, and no one laughed, anyway. But hey, in an age where Lieberman is just as good a man of G-d as the next one, I guess it shouldn't be surprising.

But: hard to imagine "mosque" finding its way in there, eh? Hard to imagine a Muhammed being just as good as a Lieberman.
