Ate first of two Golden Deliciouses today. It was pretty good--a little sour, but generally sweet and crispy--as Golden Deliciouses generally are. I bit off a bit and threw it toward a red squirrel that had been poking around my picnic table. I didn't think it would be interested in it, but it picked it up and proceeded to bite off and spit out the skin, before eating the rest.

One thing squirrels know: before you eat something, you have to take the cover off.

The ambient wildlife lately has prominently featured a red-tailed hawk. (Well, maybe more than one, but never more than one at once.) It lands on things, and then the crows come and dive-bomb it and yell at it. I wonder what the crows think they're doing. I guess most crows don't have any particular idea why they're doing it--they've probably never actually experienced a hawk doing anything bad to them or to other crows or anything else. But one thing crows know: whatever that thing is, the thing to do is dive-bomb and yell at it. (And, apparently, go and collect your friends so they can dive-bomb and yell at it, too.)

I've heard a prof use the falcon silhouettes you put on windows to prevent bird-crashes as an illustration of Plato's "theory of recollection".

The flesh has its memories that the mind cannot comprehend.
