The metaphor my father uses is a spiral staircase. If you're 'developing', or whatever, you keep coming back to the same things, but you're at a higher spot than where you were. I actually like the idea of 'deepening' or 'augmenting' (one of my favorite words) better - but it amounts to about the same thing. The spiral staircase emphasizes transcendence, while a 'deepening' emphasizes the total scope of one's being.
