I don't wanna swim

High temp today, here: 24. Dewpont then: 18. High dewpoint: 19.
High temp today in TO: 25. Dewpoint then: 18. High dewpoint: 19.

Katrina is dribbling on us unimpressively.

I forgot to mention this yesterday: a few weeks ago, on the way to York, I noticed a strange new bus stop at Keele and Finch, which identified itself as a VIVA stop. Then, at York, another VIVA stop, and sitting at it, a purple VIVA bus. Yesterday, I saw some people getting off a VIVA bus at York. Now, I have no idea what a VIVA bus is. I can't even make anything of "VIVA". But here we are at the beginning of another school year, and there are VIVA busses, and people take them, from somewhere, to York.

And it struck me: the kids will take the VIVA bus, and the kids will not know that it has not ever been this. Shortly if not already everything will be familiar to them, including VIVA busses, including the new buildings on campus whose names I don't know, including who knows what that I don't even know about yet. But for me, it's alien, and will always be at least a little alien.

Modern life is like that: a place is more familiar to the people who just arrived than it is to the people who've been around for a while. Well, you know, that's pretty commonplace (and it's all part of the perpetual present), but it never really hit me like that before. God knows Toronto is more familiar to people who just moved in than to people who've lived there for 50 years.
